Dementia Care in Assisted Living Facilities

By: Shawn Rader

Of the 300,000 assisted living facilities in the country, some specialize in residents with dementia, and suggest the following activities for these residents:

  • Socializing one on one with conversation of reading a book together
  • Simple arts and crafts
  • Talk about, sing or listen to music
  • Work on a puzzle
  • Visit with animals, such as therapy dogs
  • Exercise by walking in nature or even just outside

There are many good suggestions for reviewing the qualifications of such facilities in Elaine K. Howley’s February 28th article in US News and World Report.
